How to Throw a Fun and Unforgettable Divorce Party: Themes, Games and Cheeky Ideas

When I first threw my Divorce Party, I was not trying to shock anyone. I wanted to turn a heavy chapter into something hopeful and funny with the people who loved me. Years later, the photos still make me smile because the heart of the night was simple. Let go of shame. Celebrate a new beginning. Do it with kindness, confidence, and a little cheek.

Why I Chose a Jail Break Theme

The theme was not random. For years I felt trapped by a situation that was not healthy or happy. There were repeated betrayals and a lot of stress tied to money, drinking and gambling. Without airing all the personal details, the feeling was that of a metaphorical prison. My divorce was the key that opened the door.

A Jail Break theme let me express that shift in a playful way. The pool noodle jail cell became a prop for laughing with my friends, but it also symbolised release. Moving out. Starting fresh. Choosing peace. The stripes, the quotes, the cheeky games were not about revenge or punishment. They were about freedom and relief.

Is a Divorce Party “Right”

Some people wonder about the moral side of a divorce party. My view is that celebrations can honour healing without disrespecting anyone. A divorce party does not have to be mean spirited. Mine thanked my support network and marked a turning point. It reminded me that I had friends by my side in life too, because when we are partnered it is easy to forget to make time for the people who love us just as much. Laughter helped replace shame with solidarity so I could move forward with less bitterness and more gratitude.

Fun and Unique Divorce Party Themes

I love when parties have themes. Divorce Parties are no different. A theme ties everything together, from the decorations to the food to the games.

For my Divorce Party, I used the theme “Jail Break”. I asked all my guests to wear a “Jail Bird” costume and I made a “Jail Cell” out of pool noodles.

Making the Jail Cell took a little time to connect the pool noodles into a grid. Then I wrapped them with duct tape, which held them together and created a great metal looking finish.

This Jail Cell became the centre of my party space. I decorated the rest of the area in black and white with a tablecloth, DIY chair covers, and balloons.

I also hung some funny divorce quotes on the walls. A few were a bit naughty, perfect for setting the mood for a cheeky celebration.

You can see my full setup here:

The Jail Cell also worked as a fun photo booth with my friends throughout the night. We had a great time celebrating my divorce.

Cheeky Divorce Party Food and Drink Ideas

Humour was the pressure valve. Yes, there was a penis pinata and cheeky food. The jokes gave everyone permission to relax, to stop whispering about divorce like it is a secret. Laughter helped replace shame with solidarity.

I did not go overboard serving tons of food, but I did get creative. Even though the theme was Jail Break, I also incorporated phallic objects wherever I could.

First, I made a bright pink cheeky willy cake. It is on my blog as a cake hack. It is easy and definitely makes a statement.

I also put together snack plates with suggestive, inappropriately placed objects. Here is one example with long hot dogs, chips, and creatively located balls of dip.

Keep snacks simple — the comedy does the heavy lifting.

You can make snack plates like this out of almost anything. Pair something long with two things that are round. Think sausages, cucumbers, and candy bars matched with grapes, melon balls, or mini cupcakes.

Do not forget the drinks. I set up a DIY Mimosa Bar so everyone could create a mimosa to suit their taste. For an Aussie backyard bash, you can find everything easily at your local Woolies or Coles.

Funny Divorce Party Games for Adults

Pin the Tail on the Ex

This is based on the classic pin the tail on the donkey. I created a playful version with a cheeky face to keep it light. For me it was symbolic and silly, a way to turn frustration into laughter in a safe and harmless way. Think of it like a cartoon, not a target. The goal was to help everyone loosen up and stop treating divorce like a taboo topic.

The Penis Pinata

My papier mache penis pinata took more time. I made it with balloons for shape and paint for a realistic effect, then added a cheeky face for laughs. Smashing it open was a symbolic release for me. It was a healthy, playful outlet to process anger and frustration after a difficult period. It was harmless, it was funny, and it turned something that could have been toxic into a few minutes of laughter and relief.

  4. Paint and decorate to match your theme.
  5. Fill with treats and hang for smashing fun.

Space to swing is key — I hung ours in the garage.

We took turns swinging at the pinata to break it open. I hung it in the garage so we had plenty of space. Outdoors also works well. I filled the pinata with lip gloss, mini nail polish, condoms, and funny quotes. We each chose a favourite quote and posed for more pictures.

Note from me today. Not every separation looks the same. My more recent experience was collaborative and focused on co parenting. No matter your path, I hope these ideas help you celebrate your next chapter with kindness, confidence, and a little laughter.
