Our daughter Paige absolutely loves Unicorns. So, for her 4th Birthday Party last year, we decided to go all out on a Unicorn themed party. Our goal was to transform our outdoor party space into a lavish, stylish, magical party venue while sticking to a budget.
We were pretty pleased with the results and our daughter and her guests were blown away by the party. If you’re interested in holding your own unicorn party, this guide will help you to plan everything from the decorations to the food to the party games.

Magical Rainbow Unicorn Party Theme
Once we had decided on the unicorn theme, we made some decisions about the colour scheme. To keep everything tied together, we settled on a purple, aqua blue and pink colour scheme with a few yellow, gold & silver touches. Here’s a picture of us with our three kids, Donte, Isla, and Paige.

Decorating the Unicorn Party Area
Paige's party features personalised party decorations from our Magical Unicorn party theme. A sweet and whimsical design that is popular with girls of all ages.
At Katie J Design and Events, our party products are available individually, so you can mix and match the pieces that suit your space, budget and setup style. If you are planning your own celebration, start by browsing our party supplies collection and our range of personalised party banners to build a look that works for your event.
For a unicorn party like this, you might choose a large banner, bunting, posters, personalised labels, party bags and matching stickers depending on how much styling you want to do. Choosing decorations separately also gives you more flexibility, and volume discounts are automatically applied in the cart for larger orders.
Balloon Filled Party Space
In addition to our personalised banners and posters, we decorated with hundreds of balloons. The balloon decorations really made the space feel magical and exciting for the kids, and it is not as time consuming or expensive as you may think.
Because the space featured an outdoor area, we closed it off with large blue tarps to keep the balloons from flying away and to make sure that any bad weather didn’t spoil the day. They also added a great pop of colour.

Balloon Quantity Guide:
L x W x 10 = maximum effect, full ceiling coverage
L x W x 7 = fantastic display
L x W x 5 = scattered effect for larger spaces
If you are working out how many balloons you need for your own setup, try our handy balloon calculator. It is a simple way to estimate balloon quantities for ceilings, garlands and party styling features before you shop.
We ordered our helium balloons pre-filled and tied from Big W. This saved us a lot of time and cost about $1 per balloon. We used around 250 balloons to cover our outdoor area. If you are creating your own display, you can also browse our 30cm party balloons for garlands, balloon clusters and table styling.

We also created Unicorn Balloon Towers and Columns using inflatable unicorn heads to add colour and excitement to the space. Here’s a simple tutorial for making your own Balloon Towers and Columns.

Unicorn Cake & Lolly Table
The main focal point of our party area can be seen below. This space was perfect for taking adorable photos throughout the day.
Our main table was clothed with a white tablecloth with a purple overlay. I also made a DIY table skirt using rainbow glitter tulle. I sewed a loose running stitch so it gathered along the top, then thumbtacked it to the trestle table. We finished the look with gold star table scatters.
If you are styling your own unicorn dessert table, this is also a lovely place to add a cake topper or a set of birthday candles to help tie the whole table together and create a beautiful photo moment when the cake comes out.

How to Make a DIY Unicorn Backdrop with Balloon Garland
We decorated a photography stand with gold foil fringe curtains, added a balloon garland attached with zip ties, then hung our large canvas party banner using invisible fishing line. We filled empty spaces with additional balloons using adhesive tabs.
This combination of a personalised banner, a foil fringe backdrop and balloons works beautifully for unicorn parties because it adds shimmer, colour and height without making the space feel too cluttered. It is also a great way to create a photo wall behind your cake table or presents table.
Check out our Guide to Hanging Party Banners for more decorating tips, or browse our foil fringe curtains collection if you want more backdrop colour options.

Unicorn Guest Tables & Centrepieces
We kept the guest tables simple with coloured plastic tablecloths and cute centrepieces using unicorn horn party hats and sparkle wands displayed in recycled jars. Add curling ribbon or a Magical Unicorn Sticker to dress them up.

When guests arrived, we served pink lemonade in champagne glasses decorated with gold curling ribbon.

Unicorn Photo Props
We also got a large Unicorn Airwalker Helium Balloon that Paige loved playing with. It made a fantastic photo prop and matched her adorable party dress. For cute outfits, check out Marigold Kids.

Unicorn Themed Party Food
Unicorn Birthday Cake
We made plenty of fun unicorn snacks, but our main focus was the cake. This stunning decorated mudcake unicorn cake was designed by The Cheesecake Shop Beenleigh. It matched our colour palette perfectly.
If you are planning a unicorn birthday cake of your own, soft pastel icing, gold details and colourful sprinkles all work beautifully with this theme. A few well-chosen birthday candles can also help make the cake feel even more special without needing a complicated setup.

Other Unicorn Themed Party Foods
To keep everyone well-fed, we served unicorn themed snacks including:
- Purple Fairy Floss
- Chocolate Spoons with Sprinkles
- Pink Frosted Donuts decorated with Twinkles Sprinkles, fondant ears & horns
- Macarons from Coles
- Unicorn Bark with Twinkle Sprinkles
- Wafers Dipped in Sprinkles
- Blue Jelly in champagne glasses with curled ribbon
- Candy bowls with Starburst, Muskstick pieces, and Candy Jewellery

Unicorn Themed Drinks
We also served fun unicorn themed drinks. Using our Personalised Magical Unicorn Water Labels, we decorated simple pop top juices and water bottles to give them a magical pop of colour.

Unicorn Themed Party Favours
Unicorn Party Favour & Presents Tables
We created a presents table using plastic tablecloths, table skirts, and personalised Unicorn Flag Bunting from our unicorn range. One table displayed the party favours and the other was kept empty for gifts.

Unicorn Party Bags
We love giving away little party favour bags because it’s lovely to give the guests something to take home. We used Personalised Unicorn Party Bags and filled them with treats like crayons, lip gloss, costume jewellery, play dough, colouring books and more.
For Paige’s party we included:
- Mega Bubble Wands with personalised pop top labels
- Small Lollipops with 3.5cm round stickers
- Mini Choceur Chocolates with personalised chocolate labels
You can find all our personalised Unicorn Party Labels here.

Unicorn Themed Party Games
Once the decorations were finished, we set up fun unicorn party games for the kids:
- Pin the Horn on the Unicorn
- Unicorn Piñata, try our easy DIY piñata tutorial
- Unicorn Airwalker Balloon Toy
- Unicorn Colouring Sheets
- Unicorn Ring Toss

Unicorn Party Setup Tips
If you are planning your own unicorn birthday party, focus on a few key areas first rather than trying to decorate absolutely everything. A styled cake table, a backdrop for photos, balloons overhead or in a garland, and a few personalised decorations can make a huge impact without blowing the budget.
- Choose a clear colour palette such as pink, purple, aqua and gold
- Use a personalised banner as your main focal point
- Add balloons to the ceiling, a garland, or table areas for height and colour
- Use foil fringe curtains behind the cake table or photo wall for instant sparkle
- Keep guest tables simple and save the bigger styling for the main party area
- Finish the cake with candles or toppers so it feels special in photos
This approach keeps your unicorn party feeling magical, coordinated and photo-ready while still being manageable for busy parents.
