What you will need
- A personalised party banner or personalised photo banner
- A freestanding photography or backdrop stand that is wider than your banner
- S hooks that fit the stand and banner eyelets
- Strong twine or clear fishing line
- A hole punch if you choose to add an optional centre support
- A foil fringe curtain or another lightweight backdrop layer
- Balloons, a balloon pump and balloon decorating strip
- Scissors, plus suitable weights or sandbags to stabilise the stand
Before you begin: Check the finished width and height, leave clear access to doors and walkways, and keep the display away from ceiling fans, heaters, candles and other hazards. If children will be nearby, keep loose twine, deflated balloons and balloon pieces out of reach.
How to set up a birthday banner backdrop step by step
1. Choose the position and plan the finished height
Decide whether the display will sit behind a cake table, present table or open photo area. Look at it from the room entrance and from the place where you expect to take photos. Make sure the birthday person's face, name or age will not be hidden by the table, balloons or cake.
2. Assemble and stabilise the backdrop stand
Set up the two uprights and top crossbar, then adjust the width so the banner will sit comfortably inside the frame. Check that the feet are fully open and the crossbar is level. Add suitable stand weights before decorating, particularly if the display is outdoors or in a busy area.
3. Add the S hooks to the top bar
Place an S hook near each end of the top crossbar. In my setup, these became the main hanging points for both the banner and the balloon strip. Position them to match the banner's corner eyelets so the top edge hangs evenly.
4. Layer the foil fringe behind the banner
Hang the foil fringe so it sits behind the banner and drops below it. This hides the open stand, adds movement and gives the finished backdrop more depth. Smooth or separate the fringe strands before the banner goes in front so they fall naturally.
5. Hang the banner from the corner eyelets
Lift the banner into position and connect its top corner eyelets to the S hooks. Katie J Design and Events banners are printed on durable, waterproof canvas and include corner eyelets, giving you secure points for hooks, ribbon, fishing line or twine.
Step back before tightening anything. Check that the design is centred on the stand and level in the room, not just level against a nearby wall or doorway.
6. Use twine to straighten and tension the banner
Tie twine through the available eyelets and around the stand, applying gentle, even tension. Work from side to side so you do not pull one corner too tightly. The goal is to remove obvious sagging while allowing the canvas to hang naturally.
7. Add optional centre support
In the video, I used a hole punch to add an extra hanging point at the centre of the top edge, then secured it with twine. This helped keep the banner straight across the wider stand.
This is optional. If you do not want to make an extra hole, use only the existing eyelets and add support around the stand without piercing the printed area. Never pull so firmly that the eyelets or canvas distort.
8. Stretch balloon decorating strip across the top
Run balloon decorating strip along the top of the display between the S hooks. Leave enough length at each end to position and secure it. Keeping the balloon strip separate from the banner's printed face makes it easier to adjust the balloons without covering the important details.
9. Inflate the balloons and build the garland
Inflate the balloons with a pump and push each tied neck into the holes in the decorating strip. Alternate colours and slightly vary the balloon sizes for a fuller, more relaxed look. In Paige's display, the bright pink, purple, yellow, orange and green balloons echoed the colourful roller-skate design.
Keep checking the front view as you work. It is easy for balloons to drift down over a name, age or face, so leave the key personalised details clear.
10. Tie the balloons securely and style the area
Once the garland is in place, use more twine to secure it to the stand at several points. Trim or tuck away visible ends. Add your table, cake or presents in front, then take one final photo to check the spacing and make small adjustments.
