Fair Dinkum Fun Australia Day Party
Every year on the 26th of January we host an annual Australia Day Party and spend the day celebrating with family and friends. It has become one of our favourite traditions. When the weather is warm and sunny, the whole day feels festive and fun.
We dress in Aussie colours, swim by the pool, play cricket, and cook a delicious BBQ for everyone to enjoy. Each year we have discovered new ideas, decorations, and recipes that make the celebration even better.
We even have a full range of Australia Day Party Decorations at Katie J Design & Events to help you create a memorable celebration at home, at the park, or by the pool.
Here are some of the fun times we have had and our favourite tips for hosting a ripper Aussie Day Party.
How to Throw a Ripper Australia Day Party
Australia Day is the perfect time to show off your favourite Aussie colours. Decorations, plates, cups, posters, banners, and matching outfits all help create a festive atmosphere.
I like to use:
- Posters and banners hung around the entertaining area
- Colourful tablecloths and matching disposable plates and cups
- Easy clean up supplies, especially when hosting outdoors
- Fun outfits and hats in green, gold, blue, and red
Everyone feels excited as soon as the decorations go up.
One year we used blue and red. It matched perfectly with our Southern Cross themed supplies. The photos were amazing and it was a perfect family moment.
If you love Green and Gold, our Kangaroo themed decorations are perfect. The range includes labels, stickers, posters, banners, and full party packs.
We also have Aussie Character Decorations with Dundee, shrimp on the barbie, Uluru, thongs, boomerangs and more. Kids and adults love the playful artwork.
Fun Australia Day Games & Activities
Swimming
A pool party is always a hit on Australia Day. There is nothing better than splashing with mates to stay cool. If you do not have a pool, check out your nearest beach, waterpark or creek.
Water games are always fun too. Try sprinklers, water balloons or water pistols.
Cricket
Cricket has become a family ritual. Kids and adults love batting, bowling and fielding. If your yard is too small, set up at a local park. You might even have neighbours join in.
Other Fun Things to Do
There are so many fun things to do on Australia Day. Your imagination is the only limit.
A few years ago our friends created a massive Slip n Slide with a tarp and bubbles. It was hilarious and kept everyone cool.
Other ideas include:
- Frisbee
- Boomerang, gumboot or thong throwing
- Aussie Rules Football
- Pie eating competitions
- A baking contest with a trophy for the winner
- Bush dancing
Australia Day Drinks
Every party needs drinks and food. At our celebration it is usually beer and water to keep the adults happy and the kids hydrated.
They look great with our Beer Labels and Water Labels.
If beer is not your thing, try an Australia Day cocktail. Cocktails and Bars has a great list of recipes.
Easy Australia Day Food Ideas
Food is a big part of the day. I like dishes that are simple, nostalgic and easy for guests to pick up. Here is what we served.
Vegemite Sandwiches
Vegemite sangas are an Aussie icon. Cut into triangles and topped with cheese, they are easy for kids to make and enjoy.
Meat Pies and Lamingtons
Meat pies and lamingtons never last long. These can be bought premade and warmed up, making hosting easy.
Snags on the BBQ
Nothing says Australia Day like a BBQ. Sausages on bread are always popular and make a delicious feast.
Koalas in a Creek
These were a kids favourite and so easy to make. Fill plastic cups with blue jelly, set in the fridge, then add a Caramello Koala and a flag.
You can use premade cupcake toppers or make your own with cardboard, toothpicks and stickers.
I hope these ideas have given you inspiration if you are planning an Australia Day Party. Feel free to leave a comment or contact me if you have any questions.
