Pokemon Birthday Party Ideas & Photos

Fun Pokemon Birthday Party Ideas

Did you know that Charmander turns into Charmeleon, and that Pikachu charges its electric powers while sleeping?

I didn’t either!

But my son Donte had a Massive Obsession with Pokemon from about 7-9 years of age, so despite my lack of Pokemon knowledge, we Celebrated his 8th Birthday with a Pokemon-Themed Party.

This was a tricky one for me as I was not familiar with any of the characters despite their popularity over the years. So I spent a lot of time on Google researching the characters to get it just right for him!

And it turns out that Pokemon-Themed Parties are a lot of Fun to Plan. Between the TV Show, Card Game, and Video Game, there are a lot of Neat Pokemon and Storylines, and I enjoyed coming up with the Theme’s Look and Yummy Treats.

As an Added Bonus, some of the Adults at the Party Enjoyed the Theme, either because they are Huge Fans of the Franchise or they felt some Nostalgia for their Youth.

So if you have a Pokemon Fan in your Home, here are some Ideas and Inspiration to get you started on a Fun Pokemon-Themed Party!

Pokemon Party Area & Setup

One of my Favourite parts of Party Planning is the Theme and Decorations.

For the Pokemon-Themed Party, we decided to use the PokeBall as one of our Inspirations. For Colour, we incorporated a lot of Red and Black. We also have these Personalised Invitations that are PokeBall themed.

For an accent, we used some Golden Yellow, just like the colour from the title “Pokemon.”

For the Party Setup with several children about my son’s age of 8, we needed a lot of Room. Luckily we have a Dining Area that opens up to a deck, so there was plenty of space for the kids to play their games. And we had lots of Bench and Table area to lay out all of the food and party bags.

Lots of Pokemon Banners and Scene Setters decorated the room. You can see in the pictures how the PokeBall-based Decorations and Pokemon characters helped create the Fun Theme.

Pokemon Games

For any Party, it’s a Blast to come up with Themed Games that keep the Party Kids Busy.

For Donte’s Pokemon-Themed Party, I made a PokeBall-style Pinata from Cardboard and Crepe, and attached an Image of the Pokemon Groudon. The Kids got to “Smash” the armoured Pokemon open! Check out my blog post on How to make a Super Easy DIY Kids Party Pinata for tips on how to make your own.

They also played a game similar to Musical Chairs. I laid out pictures of PokeBalls on the ground and each time the music stopped they had to jump on one.

A good time was had by all that particapated in Balloon Race Game, well those that didn't pop their balloon! We had Red & Black Balloons to match the Pokemon theme and the kids had to race bowlegged with the balloons between their legs from one side of our yard to the other.

For a way to really get the Party Kids moving in Pokemon-Themed Style, I love the idea of a PokeBall Hunt. Outdoors or Indoors, Plastic Eggs could be repurposed with Fun Treats inside for them to find and keep.

On a really Warm Day, it would be fun to play Squirtle-Themed Water Games, like Slip ‘N Slide or Water Balloons. And of course, there are Party Classics, like Pin-the-Tail on Pikachu.

Pokemon Party Food and Treats

We had a “Poke Snacks” Table with lots of treats for the Party Kids to eat.

For the Pokemon-Themed Party, I used alliteration to Gather Snacks and Candies for each Pokemon:

  • "Groudon's Gumballs"
  • "Wartotle's Wafers"
  • "Monferno's Marshmallows"
  • "Sandshrews Sherberts"
  • "Mewtwo's M & M's"
  • "Totodile's Toffees"
  • "Flygon's Fairy Floss"

And on the Pokemon Party Platters we served:

  • "Squirtle's Savoury Biscuits" (Shapes Biscuits)
  • "Charmander's Chews" (LCM Bars)
  • "Pickachu's Popcorn"
  • "Bulbosaur's Biscuits" (Oreos)
  • "Blastoise's Bubblegum"
  • "Charmeleon's Cordial"

The Party Kids all got a Party Bag packed full of treats and Pokemon cards to take home with them, as well as Personalised Pokemon Chocolates.

We have lots of other labels for Pokemon Themed Treats, such as Pokemon Party Cup Stickers, Personalised Bottled Water Labels, and Personalised Party Round Stickers that are Perfect for Large Lollies. Anything Customisable is a Special Way to celebrate the Party Boy or Girl!

Pokemon Birthday Cake

Due to my limited baking skills, Donte's Birthday cake was pretty basic. But that means it’s easy to Recreate! I made a Large Round Chocolate Sponge. A Boxed Mix or Premade is super simple, too.

I iced half the cake in Red Frosting and the other half in White with Black Liquorice Stripes & a small White Fondant Circle added to create a PokeBall.

A cake topper that Spelled Donte’s Name in the Pokemon Themed Font and Colour was the perfect Finishing Touch for the Delicious Cake Centrepiece.
